Tuesday, May 12, 2009

The second annual Rope for Life was held at Max Maserang’s arena on April 18th. Rope for Life is a team roping event organized by Rotarian Teresa Bowen of Mesa Veiw Home Care, to raise money for the American Cancer Society and Moapa Valley Rotary Charity Medical Assistance. One hundred and forty teams saddled up to do their part in the fight against cancer. This year’s event was sponsored by Mesa View Home Care and Mesa View Physical Therapy. Ropers paid $100 to rope three steers. Ropers could enter up to three times for a total of nine steers and the team with the fastest time catching three steers won cash and prizes. Craig Wisner and Perry Goldtooth won saddles donated by Tom Collins. Lorie Purdy and Max Maserang won saddles donated by the Moapa Valley Federal Credit Union for the highest placing girl and highest placing senior 55 years and older. Bonus steers were put in the roping and prizes of shirts, hats, ropes and horse equipment were given away. A gas grill donated by Ace Hardware was raffled off and won by Jeremy Ruff. On April 24th, a check for $2,000 was presented to the American Cancer Society at the opening ceremonies of Relay for Life. Rope for Life raised $5,440 over all. The remaining $3,440 was put into a Moapa Valley Rotary Charity Medical Assistance fund. Bowen stated “we created a fund for the Moapa Valley residents to assist with the cost of medical expenses.” “Last year we donated all the money to the American Cancer Society and I felt really good about that, but this year with the economy the way it is, we felt that a portion of the money should be keep here in the valley to help our community.” Bowen wanted to thank all of the sponsors: Moapa Valley Federal Credit Union, Sugars, Inside Scoop, Ace Hardware, Shears, Maverick Trailer Sales, Tom Collins, Home Hardware, The Barber Shop, Tiffany’s Pies and Subs, Moapa Valley Mortuary, and Glen Hardy Farms. “Without the support of the community and our sponsors this event would not be possible, what a great community we have!” Attached Picture: Winners of Rope for Life (left to right) Max Maserang, Lorie Purdy, Event coordinator Teresa Bowen, Parry Goldtooth and Craig Wisner. 2nd photo Haley Bowen presents the flag for the opening ceremony of Rope for Life
